If the elderly person lives alone and has no family or friends in the area, does anyone have suggestions for emergency pet care?

I'd check first with the vet the elderly person uses. Maybe the vet has boarding facilities, or often one of the vet techs will temporarily "adopt" the pet, given the circumstances.
Local rescue groups might also steer you to prospective foster "parents."
I hope this help.
