Bark! Bark!! BARK!!!

The dog barked the neighbor boy right off of his bicycle last week, and they complained. Other people have complained about his barking, and it’s getting hard to sleep through the night without getting woken once or twice by his barking fits. GRRR!!WOOF!!!

Can’t anything be done?

Your dog barks too much. Luckily, it’s possible to solve this problem. All dogs will bark from time to time, but there are only a handful of reasons that a dog will bark excessively. To correct this, it’s important to be aware of what is causing the barking. There are 3 or 4 reasons that dogs bark too much.

BOREDOM

Dogs that don’t get enough mental or physical stimulation will sometimes bark. She gets bored, and starts to bark. Try to give her the attention and exercise that she needs. But when she does bark from boredom, don’t give her attention. Positive or negative attention could well reinforce her idea that barking is the way to get her boredom ended.

BREED

Certain dog breeds bark more than average. Because of the job that they were bred to do, many herding dogs and hounds are like this. In spite of this, you can train her to bark a great deal less, almost a normal amount.

SEPARATION

Dogs are pack animals. Your dog may bark too much when you leave him home alone because he’s separated from his pack (you) and doesn’t know how to find you again. This can be one of the most difficult barking problems to solve, but it can be done when you know what’s causing the problem.

There is one major pitfall to avoid. When you arrive home and he’s barking, don’t give him positive or negative attention. If you do, he may think that it was his barking that caused you to come back. If he’s barking when you get home, ignore him, no eye contact, and turn your back. As soon as he stops barking, pet him and praise him to show him that he can get attention by NOT barking.

STRANGERS

Anytime a stranger comes near the house, dogs usually perceive them as being an intruder to the pack. It’s tricky to eliminate this because strangers generally unwittingly reward barking behavior. Boredom, certain breeds, separation from the pack, and strangers are reasons that dogs bark excessively. No dog owner likes to manage a dog that has a biting problem. Many breeds of dogs, big and small, Pitt Bulls and Rottweiler most prominent among them, have reportedly attacked children or other dogs, or chased a delivery boy who had to walk into the house. Though the reported cases may be extreme ones, getting bitten by a dog is not something unheard of. The onus is upon the dog owner to take sufficient preventive measures to forestall the problem before the dog actually bites someone.

This training program should be ideally undertaken when the dog is very young, by letting it mix with those other dogs which have impeccable behavior credentials. These dogs will help you in training your dog against developing a biting habit, because they correct it in their natural way. Even though biting comes naturally to dogs, if you would like to own a pooch that does not easily bite people, it has to be trained sufficiently early to understand that biting is taboo.

Since most pups are taken away from their mother and siblings after only their second month of life, it is very important that you take on the mother roll. Dogs learn the majority of their behavior during the first four months of life, which is why rescue dogs and dogs that come from puppy mills are more prone to biting than dogs whom come from responsible and respected breeders.

Puppy mills are overcrowded animal dens run by callous dog owners, who are indifferent to caring for the puppies, and cares only about how much money a puppy would fetch. Puppies that have grown up in such an atmosphere obviously have even health problems, not to speak of emotional and behavioral problems. Since they have no exposure to good behavior, they do not understand what it is.

However, even if you have chosen to raise a rescue dog that has a tendency to bite, it is not impossible to correct it. Needless to say, training a pup is easier than training an adult dog, but even a grown dog with a biting habit can be trained to give up the habit.

The same techniques apply when training an older dog as training a puppy, but the training must be done at a lower intensity. If your older dog is prone to biting other dogs and animals then it would not be wise to let him loose in a dog park with the hopes that the other dogs will cure him; just as it would be extremely unwise to let a dog with a child biting problem loose in a playground. Thats just a law suit waiting to happen.

The dog has to be trained in a phased manner, by being taken around a dog park so that it becomes familiar with the other dogs, and then slowly bringing it into closer contact with them. Perseverance and determination are what sets the tone for succeeding in ridding a dog of this unwelcome habit.
